Community Projects Report
By Alison McNaughton and Mary Jo Foley
Perennial Planters’ continues to maintain Mary Elizabeth Sharpe Park as its major community project. In 2012 - 2013 we held four workdays - two in the fall and two in the spring.
This year we embarked on a major clearing project, ridding the park of poison ivy and other small saplings that were beginning to crowd out the rhododendrons, hydrangeas, and other specimen quality plants. We made great progress on level one and level two, and this year we plan to focus our efforts on level three.
In the future, we hope to plant several new native shrubs to replace those that have died over the years. Since our access to water is somewhat limited, our replanting efforts will be spread over a number of years. This will allow us to better care for the new plants as they mature.
Finally, we would like to thank the many wonderful volunteers who devoted their time to help us care for this beautiful park. We couldn’t have made such great progress with out you! Many many thanks!
