Membership Committee
The committee is pleased to report the addition of a stellar class of new members, with thanks to the entire membership for bringing forward new friends and for submitting some wonderful letters for the record. It is gratifying to report that each one has taken on a substantial role in the club, beginning with Alison McNaughton who is our Board Secretary, Kathleen Leddy is our Horticulture Chair and will be attending the GCA Annual Meeting in Philadelphia, Erika Lamb is our Scholarship Chair, Genie Trevor assisted in planning our January meeting, and we all look forward to attending our own Annual Meeting at Jennifer Jencks’ lovely home in Seekonk.
We were glad to ask Sophie Danforth to remain in our club as an Honorary Member, since she is spending much of her time in Florida. Mrs. Danforth became a member on April 16, 1957, proposed by Mrs. Seaman and Mrs. Madeira. Among her many committee roles, she served as Secretary of the Board in 1970 and 1971, First Vice President in 1972 and 1973, and President in 1974 and 1975. Her establishment of the Rhode Island Zoological Society in 1963, which she chaired until 1983, took priority thereafter. In her acceptance letter, she writes “I cannot tell you how deeply touched and honored I am that you would like me to be an honorary member! Thanks you so much for thinking of me, after all these years, in such a lovely way. I accept with great pleasure and quite a lot of humility as, truly, I never was a very good gardener!”
Respectfully submitted,
Liz Rollins Mauran
